Lisbon Architecture Tour - Discover the City Through Its History

A large, historic building with a red and beige facade, ornate architectural details, and tall arched windows, set behind a formal garden with trimmed hedges, statues, and a waterway in the foreground.

Discover the history of Lisbon through its architecture. This tour will take you on a journey through time, starting with Roman remains and passing through the Arab period, surviving Romanesque and Gothic structures, and the extraordinary rebuilding that followed.

We will, of course, walk through Baixa and explore its remarkable rebuilding plan, including its innovative approach to earthquake-resistant construction. We will get acquainted with the flair of 19th-century Lisbon before going off the beaten path to discover the architecture and grand urban plans of the dictatorship years.

We will discover one of my favourite gardens in the city while visiting one of the palaces that survived the earthquake. No architecture tour would be complete without discovering Portuguese Late Gothic architecture, known as Manueline, and exploring its connections to the Discoveries and the profound social changes of the 15th and 16th centuries.

To finish our journey by looking towards the future, we will visit MAAT, an example of 21st-century architecture in Lisbon.

Practical Information

  • ‍ ‍

  • Starting point: In front of Casa dos Bicos

  • Start time: I recommend starting the tour at 10:00 AM, but I am happy to adjust the time to suit your preferences. We can agree on the exact start time when you proceed with your booking

  • Duration: 6 hours

  • This tour will be mainly on foot, but we will use public transport (metro and/or taxi/Uber) between a few sites. Public transpor costs are included in the tour fee. If you prefer, I can arrange private transportation for an additional cost. Contact me to find out more

  • Please note that some heritage sites are closed on specific days. While we can always admire them from the outside, on those days we will not be able to visit their interiors

  • Jerónimos Monastery can be extremely crowded during the high season, and depending on the queues and visitor numbers, we may or may not be able to visit the interior. I prefer to be transparent about this rather than promise something that may not be realistic on the day

  • Monument entrance fees are not included in the tour fee

  • There will be time for a snack break along the way. Alternatively, if you prefer, I can recommend a place for lunch during the more off-the-beaten-path part of the tour, giving you the opportunity to experience a more local side of Lisbon

  • Although much of this tour takes place in the flatter areas of Lisbon, keep in mind that the city is built on hills, and a little uphill walking is inevitable. We will always walk at a comfortable pace, but comfortable shoes are highly recommended given the nature of Lisbon's pavements

  • Group size: Maximum 6 participants.
