Portuguese Arts and Crafts Tour

‍ ‍◴ 5 hours

Portuguese decorative arts have a long history that goes well beyond their best-known expression, the azulejos (Portuguese tiles). This tour introduces you to a rich heritage encompassing furniture, metalwork, ceramics, stonework, textiles, woodwork and, of course, tiles.

Portuguese arts and crafts reflect many influences, from Islamic traditions that continued to shape Portuguese craftsmanship after the Reconquista, to the new materials and decorative influences brought from around the world during the Age of Discoveries.

At the Museum of Decorative Arts, we will discover the distinctive character of Indo-Portuguese art, admire furniture made with exotic Brazilian woods, and explore the world of Portuguese ceramics and textiles.

But we will not remain inside museums. We will also look at how decorative arts found their way onto Lisbon's façades, from ornamental tiles to intricate ironwork on balconies. These seemingly small details give buildings their individuality.

Another fascinating example is calçada, or Portuguese pavement, which has become such an integral part of Lisbon's landscape. We will learn about its history and admire some of its iconic designs.

A tour of Portuguese crafts would not be complete without woodwork with gold leaf and stone carving, which we will discover at São Roque, one of Lisbon's most remarkable churches. On our way there, we will also pass shops showcasing how alive Portuguese craftsmanship remains today, from Bordalo Pinheiro ceramics to Vista Alegre porcelain.

Finally, we will venture off the beaten track on Tram 18 to visit Fábrica de Sant'Anna. The factory has been producing tiles using traditional methods since the 18th century, in the same location. We will see how they are made and, if you wish, take home a tile as a souvenir.
