This tour explores the elegant neighbourhood of Chiado. After the earthquake, the aristocracy was not particularly keen on rebuilding their homes in the newly planned downtown, and many chose the hill instead, not only as a place to live but also as a place for their social gatherings. This is where Lisbon's opera house and some of its most famous historic cafés can be found. And, of course, where there were cafés and theatres in the 19th and early 20th centuries, there was also a vibrant artistic life, with writers and artists pioneering new cultural movements.

Bordering Chiado is the neighbourhood of Bairro Alto, known for its bohemian life for centuries. A place where different social classes mingled and enjoyed life with a certain degree of mischief. A place where fado flourished, newspapers were published, and where people came to see and be seen. It is also a neighbourhood that survived the earthquake, despite its rather questionable reputation at the time. A unique and fascinating area in which to discover some of the city's secrets.

And just a little further up the same hill, passing through and admiring the unbeatable views from São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, the aristocratic Príncipe Real awaits us with its eclectic charm and historic garden.
